This is a new communications concept, developed by turnstone.tv for the HBOS group, Royal Sun Alliance and other clients, that opens up a whole new layer of comms opportunities for larger organisations.

It uses DV and web/satellite technology to deliver professional internal comms messages, at a fraction of the normal cost, but with enhanced power, penetration and above all, relevance.

Management briefings • Sales motivation • Training • Performance recognition • Sharing best practice • HR issues • Community building • Brand building • Change management

key features

Programmes are fronted and partially produced by colleagues. Colleague presenters are better received by colleagues than professionals. Having colleagues also behind the camera (and the script) improves acceptance, motivation and penetration still further.

Programmes are shot on the client's own miniDV low cost/high quality cameras, which, being always available, can be used to cover events, initiatives and locations which would normally be ruled out as too expensive.

Programmes can be shot anywhere in the organisiation. In-house production units (in head office and/or based around the country) ensure that programmes are relevant and popular at local level. This helps with community-building, and facilitates feed-back to improve content further.

Programmes can be delivered regionally or nationally. National programmes can benefit from input from anywhere in the country or the business. Regional programmes can be aimed at local issues and performance targets.

A network of professional ‘Multiskill Mentors,’ one per in-house unit (of which there need be only one), provide initial training and on-going coaching as required. They help with script development and planning, carry out the more important shoots (as agreed), and take care of the edit.

The edit takes place at the client's premises, on a lap-top, so senior staff can have input and sign-off, and in-house teams can develop their skills further through watching the edit in progress.

Programmes can be delivered by satellite/business tv (if available), or by VHS, DVD or web streaming direct to desktops (with colleague interaction if required).

models

'Central' model (Royal Sun Alliance) Head office unit operates as a very cost-efficient semi-in-house production company.

'Stringer' model - (Clerical Medical) Units in offices around the organisiation feed material to a central team for company-wide delivery.

'Regional' model - (HBOS Bank) Units around the country make separate regional programmes.

start-up

The shooting kit comprises an ‘idiot-proof’ DV camera, mics, headphones and a tripod.

The training involves either one day with two Mentors, or two days with one. It covers:

• an explanation of the concept and system.

• an introduction to television grammar

• story-finding, basic scriptwriting (to a pre-set formula) and planning

• basic camera and sound operation

• basic directing

• presenting to camera

Experience shows that with support from skilled Mentors, complete beginners can begin making very good programmes almost at once.

costs

Start-up: The shooting kit comes to about £2,000 per team. Training is about £2,000 per team. Pre-prepared graphics and music are also required (costs according to standard).

Initial programme/s: Costs will vary according to size of team, skill levels, amount of supervision required.

On-going programmes: Once the system is running smoothly, programmes that would normally cost perhaps £20,000 and involve maybe 5 days filming and 3 days editing can be made for as little as £3,000.
